Blockbuster EU-Mercosur trade deal enters into force

The European Union’s comprehensive trade deal with the South American bloc Mercosur has provisionally entered into force, despite an ongoing legal challenge regarding its legality. This agreement, which establishes one of the world’s largest free-trade zones, was finalized in January after negotiations spanning over two decades. The pact is set to eliminate tariffs on more than 90 percent of trade between the two regions.

While the deal is expected to boost commerce, it has generated considerable debate within Europe, notably from France, where agricultural concerns have fueled opposition regarding potential negative impacts on local farmers. Nevertheless, with support from a majority of EU nations, Brussels proceeded with the ratification, aiming to diversify trade routes amid geopolitical challenges from the United States and China. European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the importance of implementation, stating the focus must now shift to ensuring immediate benefits for citizens and businesses through reduced tariffs and new market access.

To mark the occasion, EU leaders are scheduled to hold online talks with representatives from Mercosur nations, including Brazil and Argentina. Collectively, the EU and Mercosur represent 30 percent of global GDP and serve over 700 million consumers. The agreement facilitates European exports of goods such as automobiles, wine, and cheese, while simultaneously easing the entry of South American commodities, including beef, poultry, sugar, rice, and soybeans, into the European market.

The EU’s commitment to this trade arrangement follows a period where the European Parliament referred the pact to the EU’s top court for review. Alongside the Mercosur accord, the EU continues to pursue agreements with other major markets, including India, Australia, and Indonesia.
